Selecting a desktop computer

This article will provide basic understanding of the internal components of a computer providing definitions of those components to help the average consumer make a educated decision when buying a computer. The first thing to consider is how your planning on using the computer, for someone wanting to just surf the internet and read/send email a basic inexpensive system will probally work out fine. If you think you may want to get into gaming or digital photography look at a mid range or high end system.
When shopping for a computer there is four things to consider:

I. Processor/Cpu - The most important part of your computer, the processor is the brain of the computer it controls all of the devices and software that make up the computer the speed or model of the processor will determine how fast the system will operate , you’ll need to choose between two manufactures Amd and Intel, Intels current line are faster than Amd, but you’ll find Amd are cheaper for slightly less performance. You can find a cpu performance chart which compares various cpu speeds, it would be handy to have when you go shopping as it may help you compare different systems … the chart is below,higher the ranking the better the processor.
***Cpu’s/Processors to avoid, Celeron, Sempron, Pentium D, these would be bottom shelf procesors although youll save some cash, at the cost of performance and stability, only the Sempron makes the chart below, if I were to choose a bottom shelf product I’d pick it.

II. Memory - Memory is temporary storage, when your computer boots it loads windows into the memory, when you launch a program it will run best if there is still enough memory free for it to load into memory, if there isn’t enough memory it will run from the hardrive, but will likely be slower than if it was running in memory. How much you get will really depend on what your planning to do with the system and the operating system, I would recommend for a non-gaming system, one that will be primarily used for internet browsing, windows xp 512mb and windows vista 1gb. For a gaming or digital photography system I would double that, with windows xp 1gb and windows vista 2gb.

III. Harddrive - The harddrive is the permanent storage for the computer it s where all the data or information is stored, harddrives will come in different sizes, such as 60gb, 120gb, 300gb, the bigger the number the more information that can be stored, a machine used just for internet browsing wouldn’t need a 300gb, unless your were planning on downloading music or movies then you might want to think about a larger hardrive or adding a second drive. There are some differences in speeds with hard drives, they will have a RPM rating like 7200 rpm or 10000 rpm that latter being faster, having a faster hardrive can improve the time it takes to boot a system, or the time it takes to load programs for the average user it wont matter.

IV. Video - for a computer that will be used for gaming, the video card will be a important choice, when comparing video cards you want to look at the amount of memory the video card has 256meg 512megand the model number, for the basic non-gameing system the standard card that comes with the system will do, but a gaming system you will probably want to pay special attention to the type of card. You’ll find a another chart ranking video cards below.

Basic,a system for internet browser/photography.
Mid Range, A good all around System, decent gaming graphics
High End, Good for all your needs, great gaming graphics
